As a freelance photojournalist in New York, James Nachtwey started his career by covering the civil unrest in Northern Ireland of 1980. Since then, he has built up an award-winning and moving portfolio of images, which document war and social issues internationally. In November 2006, Nachtwey was named as a recipient of the 2007 TED Prize, which honors individuals who impact life positively. He has also received the Dan David Prize, and the Heinz Foundation Award for Art and Humanities. Nachtwey has won the World Press Photo Award, the Robert Capa Gold Medal five times, and the Common Wealth Award. He has been named Magazine Photographer of the Year seven times. His solo exhibitions have been shown at the International Center of Photography in New York, the Bibliotheque nationale de France, and The Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego to name a few. Collections include the Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art. Nachtwey is a founding member of VII Photo Agency.
